Two domestic series have been unveiled by Athletics South Africa (ASA), with the federation adding exciting Grand Prix campaigns in the Track & Field and Cross Country disciplines to the 2019 calendar.
The two-legged ASA Track& Field Grand Prix series will be held next month, with the first leg taking place in Mangaung (Bloemfontein) and the second leg going to Potchefstroom.
These series, along with the ASA Senior Track & Field and Combined Events Championships in Germiston on 25-27 April, will provide athletes with opportunities to qualify and also prepare for the IAAF World Relays in Yokohama, Japan in May and the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar in September.
In a breakthrough, ASA has also unveiled a four-leg ASA Cross Country Grand Prix series.
These Cross Country meetings will be held in Potchefstroom (6 July), Tshwane (13 July), Port Elizabeth (3 August) and Johannesburg (24 August).
“We are extremely excited with this breakthrough in the calendar,” said Aleck Skhosana, the President of ASA. “These grand prix series and the senior champs will allow our athletes high quality competition at home.
“It will also afford the Athletics Family to witness their elite athletes in top competition within their own country. We encourage all athletes to advantage of these opportunities as performances around the world are raising the bar.”
