This year’s afb Southern Cross 3-day trail event over the long weekend of 9 to 11 August promises runners some stunning yet challenging trails along the spectacular Garden Route and its surrounds.

Trisport and afb, an African consumer finance business, have teamed up to bring runners a trail event that offers three unique routes starting with a mountain stage on day 1 in the Outeniqua Mountains, beautiful trails through indigenous forest on day 2 and finishing off with rugged coastline run on day 3.

Each route is varied in terms of challenges under foot, beauty of the distinctive vegetation and the different scenery each day.  Runners can relax and recover after their run at the event’s base camp at Ebb-and-Flow Rest Camp in the Garden Route National Park.

Those who aren’t up for three days of running can enter the “Circles in the Forest” 30km or 10km trail event on Saturday 10 August from the Materoli Tea Garden, Millwood Forest.  The 30km trail is day 2 of Southern Cross 3-day trail.  Online entries for this option close on Wednesday 7 August and no entries will be taken on the Saturday, but late entries will be taken on Friday 9 August between 17h00 and 18h00 at Ebb and Flow.  To enter online and for more information visit www.trisport.co.za or email admin@trisport.co.za.

Another innovation for this event is live tracking provided by Nevarest.  Supporters will be able to track their runners by downloading the app for free at www.nevarestchallenge.com.  The app will provide live progress updates at the various check points and feeding stations along the route, provided the runners have the app on their phones and are running with them – which they will all have to do as their phones are part of their compulsory gear.

Said race organiser Hano Otto:  “Runners must check the website for a list of compulsory gear for each day as this will be checked at the start.  This gear is vital and needed in the event of an emergency when a runner is injured or can’t run and requires something to keep them warm, as well as food to sustain them until help arrives.  It can save their life.”

Some of the country’s top trail runners are expected to take part in the team event, which is the focus of this three day event.  For all event details visit www.southerncrossadventure.co.za, or contact the SOX race office on 079-8797394 or email admin@trisport.co.za.
